Innovation in Return to Work Award

About the award: Awarded to an individual or group that has developed an innovative approach to a challenge in the workplace rehabilitation industry. Details of the initiative and the stakeholders involved were considered, and nominees were assessed on how the innovation improved return to work outcome or service provision.

B-WELL : Beneco
Within Australian personal injury schemes, perceived injustice is a critical barrier to recovery. When individuals believe their experience has been unfair or mishandled, it can significantly prolong work absence and impede rehabilitation outcomes. To address this often-overlooked factor, the rehabilitation provider has developed an innovative, evidence-based intervention that places perceived injustice at the forefront of the return-to-work process. The program focusses on facets of health, home, as well as purpose. There is additionally a focus on the oft-forgotten “social” aspect of the biopsychosocial approach through a focus on the Health Benefits of Good Work and a focus on community.

Bridging Pain Recovery Across NSW : IPAR Rehabilitation
Persistent pain remains a significant barrier to recovery within compensation schemes, often leading to drawn-out or unsuccessful return-to-work outcomes, higher claim durations and costs, elevated medication use, and prolonged engagement with low-value passive care. Clients in regional and remote areas are particularly disadvantaged, with limited access to evidence-based pain interventions. To address this challenge, an evidence-informed telehealth service was developed, enabling injured workers with persistent pain to access best-practice psychosocial support and pain coaching across every suburb in NSW, regardless of their location. This service delivers an eight-week, one-on-one virtual coaching program, incorporating contemporary pain education and virtual reality (VR) technology. Clients are provided with a VR headset delivered to their home, ensuring an immersive experience that enhances engagement and learning. Sessions are led by expert Pain Coaches, trained in modern pain science and motivational facilitation techniques, aiming to retrain pain perceptions, build self-efficacy, reduce reliance on medication, and unlock recovery.

RenewYou Program : Elev8 Consulting
The RenewYou program is an innovative resilience-building initiative designed to enhance participants’ Psychological Capital (PsyCap)—hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism. This program directly addresses the growing need for mental health and resilience training in workplaces, particularly for those facing high stress, burnout, or personal challenges. It empowers individuals to develop a mental framework that improves their ability to handle stress, overcome challenges, and maintain overall well-being.

Outstanding Student Award

About the award:
* Examples of outstanding performance and achievements throughout their placement
* A statement of management support demonstrating how the student implemented the Health Benefits of Good Work
* Details of how an understanding of evidence-based practice had been demonstrated as well as the successful achievement of measurable results

Ellie Kaweroa : Procare Group
Ellie is a busy Mum who came to occupational rehabilitation after completing an Occupational Therapy degree in 2011 but never working as an OT due to family commitments. She was however interested in the medical industry and worked in medical administration for many years prior to commencing her Masters of Rehabilitation Counselling in 2023. From the outset of the placement the student quickly demonstrated her aptitude for rehab counselling, undertaking vocational assessments, vocational counselling, labour market analyses and job seeking education with ease. Ellie demonstrated a thorough working knowledge of the schemes that apply in occupational rehab as well as an innate ability to connect with clients with empathy, understanding and flexibility. The student has grown her skills and knowledge of physical and psychological claims through the placement by developing strong relationships with our existing consultants both locally and across the broader business, providing assistance with back end work and liaising with insurers and allied health professionals.

Simone Porter : Rocket Rehab
During their placement, Simone worked alongside a senior team member to support an injured worker based in the Blue Mountains. The worker had sustained a wrist injury (TFCC tear) on their first day of employment while operating an electric floor scrubber in a retail setting. Since the incident, the individual had not returned to work and had developed secondary psychological symptoms, including anxiety and fear related to using the equipment. Ahead of a scheduled medical case conference (MCC), Ellie took initiative by leading a workplace visit aimed at reintroducing the injured worker to the floor scrubber in a supportive and controlled manner. They collaborated with the store manager to learn the safe handling technique and then demonstrated it, using motivational interviewing techniques to help the worker regain confidence and engage with the equipment. Taking a creative and evidence-based approach, Ellie filmed the store manager and the injured worker using the floor scrubber (with consent from both parties). Reviewing the footage together allowed the worker to observe proper technique, helping to dispel fears and shift focus toward recovery and ability. This process helped reframe the worker’s mindset, fostering a sense of control and readiness to return to duties.

Sophie Leung : Rehabilitation Services by Altius
During their final eight-week placement in the Occupational Rehabilitation field, Sophie demonstrated exceptional dedication and compassion toward all stakeholders. Their commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred care was evident throughout, consistently going beyond what is typically expected of a student. Despite the challenges faced in the role of a Rehabilitation Consultant, Sophie remained focused on achieving meaningful outcomes and ensuring clients received the support they needed. Throughout the placement, she quickly developed independence in key responsibilities such as conducting assessments, writing reports and file notes, coordinating services and equipment, and liaising with treating professionals. Her ability to advocate for clients’ return to independence and pre-injury work was particularly impressive. Sophie approached each case with creativity and collaboration, especially when identifying home modifications and developing recovery and independence plans—achievements that far exceeded student expectations.
